John Michael Bailey

John Michael Bailey (Lubbock, 2 luglio 1957) è uno psicologo statunitense, professore presso la Northwestern University.

È noto per il suo lavoro sull'eziologia dell'orientamento sessuale, dal quale ha concluso che l'omosessualità è sostanzialmente ereditata. Ha anche scritto The Man Who Would Be Queen, che ha suscitato sia forti critiche che una nomination per un premio, successivamente ritrattate, dalla Lambda Literary Foundation, un'organizzazione che promuove la letteratura gay. Secondo la Web of Science, le opere di Bailey sono state citate circa 2200 volte e ha un indice H di 25.

Biografia

Bailey è nato a Lubbock, in Texas. Ha conseguito il Bachelor of Arts con una laurea in matematica alla Washington University nel 1979 e il suo dottorato di ricerca in psicologia clinica presso l'Università del Texas ad Austin nel 1989, dove ha studiato con la ricercatrice di genetica comportamentale Lee Willerman.

Bailey divenne professore alla Northwestern University nel 1989. Negli anni '90, Bailey pubblicò diversi articoli che suggerivano una componente ereditaria nell'orientamento sessuale. Nel 2003 ha pubblicato il testo The Man Who Would Be Queen.

Nell'ottobre 2004, Bailey si dimise da presidente del dipartimento di psicologia. Bailey continua la sua docenza alla Northwestern.
